Bumblebee Knit Hat – Free Knitting Pattern

Winter is here, and that means hot beverages, festive feeling in the air, and most importantly cozy knits!

I like dark and neutral colors, but sometimes adding a bright one helps through the shorter days and colder nights. Mustard/turmeric colors have become my favorite and this yarn had been sitting in my stash for a while after being gifted to me on my birthday. So I decided to make a cozy hat with an interesting texture on it, that could bring out more of the beautiful color and at the same time keep me well and warm.

Special thanks to my good friend Mavis who is a way better hat model than me!

Design

This hat is knit in the round, if you have never knit in the round, I recommend using the magic loop technique. I specially like knitting in the round because there are no seams and therefore nothing to sew together, but it also gives it a cleaner look. Plus, with circular needles, your project always stays together, which works great for knitting on the run, if you are like and me find some knitting time in your commute.

The brim is knit double the usual length, to allow for folding it in half. It gives an extra coziness for really cold days, but I also really like the look of a folded brim, don’t you?

The pattern includes sizes for baby, child and adult, and it works really fast, so if you need a last minute handmade gift, this pattern is guaranteed to do the trick.

Don’t be intimidated by the texture! It’s actually a very simple pattern and all you need to know is how to knit and how to purl.

Yarn

The yarn that was gifted to me was actually from a New York yarn shop called Purl Soho, which has beautiful premium yarn. The color was called Yellow Turmeric (I love that name!) and I believe it’s Soft Merino Wool. But you can use any kind of Bulky (6) weight yarn, I recommend using my go to, Lion Brand Yarn Wool-Ease Thick and Quick. You can get it in mustard for very similar color, or choose from the many different colors they carry!
