Knit Your First Socks | a step by step guide

Socks can be scary. Yes! for a knitter. When it comes to socks, they can be an obsession and some knitters knit nothing but socks OR they can be the avoided item, because of the unknown of the construction.

I personally felt that, after knitting my first sock, they are not as intimidating as I once thought, and I haven’t stopped since. Today I will walk you through each step on how to make your own socks.

This video touches on every aspect of knitting socks, from selecting the yarn and the needles you are going to work with, going through the techniques you will need to learn before starting, and then show you the process from casting on to grafting the socks. These socks will be a simple top down construction with a heel flap and grafted toe. There are of course lots of ways to knit socks, but I find this technique the easiest for a beginner. You can later explore other exciting ways to knit socks, once you’ve mastered the basic version.

The video is set up in a way that you can skip to the step that you need to, and it shows how to knit them in circular needles OR with double pointed needles (DPNs) it also shows many ways to customize the length of the leg and the foot. You can really make the perfect sock for your size!

This pattern is based off the “I’m so basic” free sock pattern by Summer Lee, you can download it on Ravelry.

If you would like to use the yarn I mentioned in the video it is the Hobbii Friends Sock Wool. and the needle set is from Knit picks.

I hope you enjoy making your first pair of socks!
