Knitting vintage patterns is a way to travel back in time and experience fashion as it was in other decades.
But it can also be a bit of a nightmare, as older knitting patterns do not compare to modern ones. They older they are, the less details you will find, as patterns used to assume you already knew a lot of knitting concepts and would not explain certain techniques.
They also tended to be only one size, which does not align with the current practice of being inclusive and including as many sizes as possible. In short, it can be a bit frustrating to knit with vintage patterns. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get the look with modern ones. A lot of pattern designers have embraced these styles, especially 1940s, 1950s and others, and have created new modern patterns that sometimes are better written reproductions of older patterns, and other times new ones completely inspired by these eras.
With these newer patterns you have all the benefit of the vintage look without the headache of the vintage pattern. So if you want to get to knitting, here are some of my favorite vintage inspired knitting patterns, mostly for sweaters and cardigans.
