Halloween is my favorite time of year. For many reasons, I’ve had spiderwebs in my mind. So when Hobbii yarn approached me to join their #HelterSkelterChallenge to design a spooky pattern I was immediately on board.
I had never designed a cardigan and to be honest I haven’t knitted too many either. I do love them and it was time to correct this. So I endeavored to begin designing this fun pattern.

Design
I went through many swatches to figure out the look of this spiderweb, which to me was the most important part, I wanted something subtle but that was clear what the design was. I ended up with this small spiderweb motif which is integrated in the cardigan by knitting it in the round top to bottom, using a combination of intarsia and stranded knitting. The rest of it has a simple round cardigan shape, which a little shaping in the waist. It’s a shorter cardigan but easy to adapt if you prefer longer looking ones. Not a lot of sewing in this pattern either so it’s quite a seamless project.
The name was something I kept changing my mind of. I had a few puns in mind (I love a good pun) but it wasn’t feeling right. I even put an Instagram poll out there and seeing the name in the world made me realize I really liked the idea of a nod to the spiders themselves, reclaiming the idea of a “spinster” being something to be ashamed of, and instead giving it a new meaning. I think it really rolls off the tongue.
Yarn
Of course this cardigan was created using Hobbii yarn, I turned their Friends wool. It was very easy to work with, it’s a perfect worsted weight wool yarn. The fact that this is knit with worsted weight also makes it a very fast knit.
I knit this in black and grey but honestly I think it would be very fun to knit it in colorful contrast yarns. My test knitters had fun with the color combinations and with the buttons as well!
